The buyer must separately identify the intended lamp, holder, voltage architecture and any transformer or driver.

The goal is to close every physical and electrical interface before approving drawings and samples. A housing that looks correct can still fail because the lamp envelope does not fit, the holder position is wrong, the aiming range collides with the ceiling, or the approved finish cannot be repeated.

Keep the housing separate from the lamp

GU10 and MR16 are often used together in product descriptions, but they do not mean the same thing. GU10 commonly identifies a cap/holder interface. MR16 is widely used as a lamp-form description and does not, by itself, determine the holder, supply voltage or control arrangement.

Le GU10, MR16 and E27 spotlight housings category is a product-browsing path. The RFQ must still name the exact lamp cap, holder, lamp envelope and electrical architecture for each housing model.

Do not ask the housing supplier to quote “MR16 compatible” without a dimensioned reference lamp. Two lamps with a similar front diameter may differ in body length, rear geometry, heat-sink shape or connector clearance.

Create one interface stack

Use a single sheet to align the parts that must fit together.

Interface

Décision relative à la demande de devis

Éléments de preuve

Montage

Recessed, surface-mounted, pendant or other form

Section drawing and installation sequence

Ceiling interface

Cut-out only where recessed; otherwise plate or base dimensions

Dimensioned mounting drawing

Holder

Exact holder type, material and mounting position

Holder identification and assembly drawing

Lamp envelope

Maximum diameter, length and rear clearance

Approved lamp outline inside housing section

Retention

Ring, spring, clip, bezel or other method

Exploded view and sample operation

Aiming

Rotation and tilt path

Drawing showing limits and collision zones

Périmètre électrique

Holder leads, terminal block, transformer or driver inclusion

Included-parts list and wiring diagram

Finition

Material, color, gloss, texture and visible tolerance

Approved physical color/finish sample

Accessoires

Springs, screws, brackets, connectors and instructions

Packing list and accessory images

IEC 60061 covers lamp caps, holders and gauges as an interface system. That is why a cap name should not substitute for an actual compatibility drawing.

Choose the mounting form before asking for dimensions

“Cut-out” applies to a recessed installation. A surface-mounted cylinder, track-related body or pendant housing needs different mounting information.

For a recessed housing, request the ceiling cut-out, minimum cavity depth, visible trim dimensions, spring position, allowable ceiling thickness and clearance needed for installation and removal.

For a surface-mounted housing, request the mounting-plate hole pattern, base diameter, wiring-entry position and the relationship between the plate and visible body. For a pendant form, add canopy, suspension and cable details.

Never copy one mounting dimension across a product family. The RFQ should identify the model and revision beside every drawing.

Verify the holder and electrical boundary

State whether the quoted housing includes the lamp holder. If it does, identify its type, rating, lead length, insulation, mounting method and replacement procedure. If it does not, show the holder interface needed by the buyer.

Also state whether any transformer, driver, connector or terminal is included. A housing-only purchase must not quietly acquire electrical assumptions from the reference lamp.

The destination market, supply architecture and lamp selection determine which electrical documents may be needed. IEC 60598-1 provides general luminaire requirements, but it does not prove that a particular housing assembly, holder or wiring arrangement is suitable for the buyer’s final combination.

Draw the permitted lamp envelope

Place the proposed lamp outline inside a sectional housing drawing. Mark:

maximum lamp diameter and length;

rear-body and connector clearance;

front-face position relative to the bezel;

retention-ring contact points;

ventilation openings and any prohibited contact;

insertion and removal path;

clearance through the full aiming range.

Use the actual intended lamp or a controlled gauge during sample approval. “Fits GU10” is not enough when the procurement program may use several lamp suppliers.

Lamp selection—beam, CRI, dimming and flicker—belongs in a separate spotlight lamp performance review. It should not be used to fill gaps in the housing specification.

Check aiming as a three-dimensional movement

A stated tilt angle may describe the internal ring, not the usable angle after installation. Review rotation and tilt with the selected lamp installed and with the housing mounted in its intended ceiling or surface condition.

Check for collisions between the lamp, holder, leads, trim, ceiling edge and internal bracket. Confirm whether the mechanism holds position after repeated adjustment and whether tightening hardware remains accessible.

If aiming marks are important for installation consistency, specify how they will be referenced. Do not assume a marketing angle equals a measured, repeatable field setting.

Approve finish with more than a color name

Names such as black, white, brass or gold do not define a production finish. Record the substrate, coating or surface process, color reference, gloss, texture and the surfaces that must match.

Approve a physical sample under agreed lighting and viewing conditions. Review visible edges, joints, fasteners and internal areas that become exposed during aiming.

The buyer should also define what counts as a major visual defect: color mismatch between parts, coating contamination, scratches, exposed substrate, inconsistent gloss or poor edge coverage. The exact tolerances belong in the approved inspection standard.

Drawing and sample approval checklist

Before releasing the housing, confirm:

product is identified as housing only and light source not included;

mounting form and all installation dimensions are shown;

holder inclusion and electrical accessory scope are explicit;

lamp envelope and removal path are approved;

aiming limits are tested with the intended lamp;

materials and finish references are locked;

springs, rings, screws and other accessories are listed;

label, instruction and carton contents match the quotation;

critical dimensions have tolerances;

changes to holder, coating, retention parts or geometry require approval.

Packaging should protect visible finishes and small accessories. Continue with the separate guide to packaging and labeling requirements when the product package is prepared.

Compare quotations only after scope alignment

A lower housing price may exclude the holder, terminal, retention ring or mounting hardware included elsewhere. Reconcile the included-parts list before comparing quotations.

The most reliable RFQ is not the one with the most dimensions. It is the one that connects mounting, holder, lamp envelope, movement, finish and packing to one approved model and drawing revision.

Sources
