Retail merchandise, office faces and documents, industrial safety colours and material inspection place different demands on the spectrum and visual environment.

Start with what people need to see, then compare light sources at the same target CCT and illuminance. A high CRI value cannot correct poor distribution, glare, flicker or the wrong colour temperature.

The U.S. Department of Energy separates color metrics from other lighting performance measures, while the Illuminating Engineering Society TM-30 method describes fidelity, gamut and hue-specific shifts in more detail than a single general CRI value. Project samples should still be judged at the intended CCT, illuminance and viewing conditions.

Compare light sources on the objects, tasks and viewing conditions that matter to the project.

What CCT changes

Correlated colour temperature, expressed in kelvins, describes whether white light appears warmer or cooler. Lower CCTs usually appear warmer; higher CCTs appear cooler. CCT does not describe colour accuracy, saturation, beam shape or brightness.

Application

Starting direction

What can change the choice

Retail and hospitality

Use CCT to support the merchandise, materials and desired atmosphere

Brand palette, daylight, finishes, skin tones and display type

Office

Coordinate task visibility, faces, screens and daylight

Daylight contribution, surface colours, glare and control strategy

Warehouse

Prioritise visual clarity and consistent identification

Rack colours, labels, safety marking and vertical illuminance

Inspection or colour-critical work

Specify colour rendition beyond a single CRI value

Materials, tolerances, reference illuminant and viewing method

Why CRI alone can be incomplete

CRI is a familiar colour-fidelity metric, but one average value does not show how individual hue regions shift or whether colours become more or less saturated. IES TM-30 adds measures and graphics that describe fidelity, gamut and hue-specific changes. For colour-sensitive projects, ask for a TM-30 report or spectral data in addition to general CRI and any relevant special indices.

Compare products at the intended CCT. Two sources with the same nominal CCT and CRI can still render materials differently. A physical mock-up with representative merchandise, finishes, labels or samples is often the fastest way to expose an unsuitable spectral choice.

CCT- and power-adjustable T8 LED tube for projects that need selectable configurations.

Retail: evaluate the objects being sold

Fashion, fresh food, cosmetics, jewellery and home finishes do not respond identically to one spectrum. Build a sample set containing the actual colours and materials customers will judge. Review vertical display light, facial appearance, reflections and contrast between accent and ambient lighting. Keep the same measurement conditions when comparing samples.

Office: coordinate colour with glare and controls

Office light must support paper tasks, faces, collaboration spaces and screens. Specify CCT and colour consistency together with glare control, distribution, flicker performance and daylight response. If tunable white is considered, define the control sequence and user experience rather than ordering a wide CCT range without an operating plan.

Industrial: define the visual task

General circulation, picking, assembly and colour inspection should not share an unexamined colour specification. Identify safety colours, labels, cable markings, surface defects or material matches that workers must recognise. For critical inspection, define the reference method and review conditions with the responsible quality team.

Put measurable requirements in the RFQ

Nominal CCT, tolerance or consistency requirement and relevant operating conditions.

General CRI plus any application-specific colour information.

TM-30 report or spectral data when colour decisions justify it.

Photometric file, glare and flicker information appropriate to the project.

Sample quantity and the surfaces, merchandise or tasks used for approval.

Rules for maintaining the approved LED and optical configuration through production.

For broader commercial planning, visit the commercial and retail lighting solution.
